Hickman County Quilt Show 2009

The Hickman County Quilt Show celebrates the rich history of quilts and their makers.
A group of women from the area started this show with the goal of gathering at least 1000 quilts made or owned by present or deceased residents. So far, they have shown more than 800 over the past 4 years. Each year the quilts are gathered, photographed and published in a book for the purpose of recording and preserving the county's history of quilts for future generations. I believe most of the quilts displayed were antiques, dating as far back as the 1800's.

Our day at the quilt show started with history lesson on Hickman County and quilting. I could have stayed and listened for the whole day.

Below: Cassaundra and her quilt she pieced together when she was 12-13 years old
and quilted this last year.
Below: My Farms and Barn quilt I made this year

Each quilt was displayed with a card describing the maker and the history of the quilt.
I forgot to take a picture of the information card on this one.

Mama's Cancer Quilt

Below: Having an appreciation for red and white quilts,
this was one of my favorites at the show.
According the information cards, I noticed most of the quilt makers
were hard working homemakers.

Sadly, next year will be the last. But we are hopeful someone will have the desire to continue the show and make it a Hickman County tradition. There were many more quilts but I was not able to stay long enough to photograph each one. When I first registered, I was not aware of how wonderful this show was going to be. Next year, my family and I will make it more of a priority and take more pictures.

Well, it's time to start on next year's quilt!
Fun!

Oh, Christa ~ Aren't those quilts amazing? I love those older ones. The time that has gone into hand quilting each one is astounding! What precious heirlooms from the past and the new ones are in the making! I have a few quilts that I have started, but sadly, I never have finished any. I need to find my 'round tuit'! ;~}
How sad that next year will be the last show! Is this something you and your daughters and other quilting ladies could endeavor? Another quilting group, perhaps?
Your quilts and Cassaundra's are so lovely. Amazing that she pieced that one at such a young age! You are both such talented ladies!
Blessings, friend!
p.s. I especially love the Grandmother's Flower Garden ~ that was the first quilt I ever made ~ almost! Still needs the binding and a little more quilting at the edges.

Lady Farmer,
Do you have the desire to finish one of your quilts?
Sometimes, just working on one a little here and little there is the best way to finish.
Do you think we will ever see a post on your blog about your quilts? Maybe a picture or two?

:)
