Butter Cream Lace

Before having children, I had a cake decorating
business I ran from my home.
It wasn’t out of the ordinary to open up my
refrigerator only to see many cakes waiting for
delivery and to have to the sweet aroma of
butter cream icing filling the air of my kitchen.
Wedding cakes were my favorite to make because
it was like adding beautiful lace on a cake.
Eventually, my first was born and I realized I couldn’t
give the proper attention to babies and cakes.
I wasn’t sorry one bit to give up my business
because I knew from an early age I wanted to be
a stay-at-home mom, homemaker…

A couple weeks ago, I was able to make a
25th Wedding Anniversary cake for some
friends.
The children in that family asked if I could duplicate
their parent’s wedding cake.

I unpacked my cake pans and other supplies
that had been in hiding for many years.
Once again, the air in my kitchen was filled
with the aroma of chocolate cake, buttercream icing…

My children, now 16, 17 and 19 years old
watched and gave me much encouragement
as I dusted off my decorating tips and
started creating.

It was so much fun.

When it was all finished, I was relieved.
After so many years, I wondered if
I had forgotten the skills I once learned.
I am convinced now, after decorating hundreds of
cakes in the past, I would never forget.

The next day, I loaded the cake in the back of
my car.  Memories of the one and only
time I had a mishap with delivering
a wedding cake (my dear husband, back then
my fiance’ was driving), came to mind.
I remember the crushed wedding cake
seemed like a disaster until I was able to
patch it up withextra icing and decorating tips.
I can laugh now.

The anniversary cake for my friends
was delivered without a problem.
Not even a rose popped off along the way.
However,
the day was the most humid day I have
experienced in Tennessee and thunder storms
were in the forcast.  Where was the cake
going to be set up?
That’s right,
outside!
We decided it would be best to set up inside.
It’s hard to see in the picture, but we
were able to set up the cake on a beautiful
Wood cook stove.

Happy 25th Anniversary
